What must I do to be saved?

You are convinced and very positive about your salvation, based on “being good”, “having Christian parentage”, “having an experience with God”, “being a Church worker”, “praying to God and receiving answers”. While all these sound very nice, they are not based upon biblical truth. So many who are now in hell lived under such delusions and had trusted in their own ways. A young man, named Saul was more sincere and persuaded he pleased God based on having the “right religion”, but the Lord Jesus encountered him and showed him how “sincerely wrong” he was.

Salvation starts with God’s mercy and our understanding that “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast”. – Ephesians 2:8-9.

What to do?

1. Admit you are a sinner and cannot save yourself Romans 6:23.

2. Be committed to change by repenting from all sin and turning your back to them forever Luke 13:3.

3. Believe in your heart that God’s offer of salvation through His Only Son, Jesus Christ, is absolute and final John 14:6; Acts 4:12

4. Accept God’s mercy and offer of His Son, who died on the cross in your place John 1:12.

5. Ask God to forgive you of your sin I John 1:9-10

6. Go ahead and trust His Word in Romans 10:9-11 and come out with the assurance that you are saved.

7. From now on, confess Jesus Christ openly before men 1 Peter 3:15

Sample Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the Son of God and I come to you as a sinner who deserves to die for my sins. I believe you died for my sin on the cross. I hate my sinful life and ask that you have mercy on me and forgive me of all my sins, as I am determined not to go back to them again. My life is yours from today. Please come and dwell in me and send me your Holy Spirit. Give me the power to live for you and obey all your commandments all the days of my life, beginning from today. Thank you for answering this prayer as I receive the new life you offered me in faith. In Jesus Christ name, I have prayed. Amen.

2 Corinthians 5:17. You have a great part to play in ensuring that the old nature of sin is put off and that the new nature is nurtured and nourished in righteousness.

If you have humbly and genuinely gone through the above process, then you need to start building your faith in God by studying and obeying the Word of God, the Holy Bible, join a true church where your new Lord is worshipped, become a disciple and be baptized in water. Your growth in your new faith is as important as the nurturing of a newborn baby. Communicate constantly with God in prayer and grow in your newfound relationship.
