Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on the Church in Nigeria to mobilise its members for responsible citizenship and peaceful participation in the 2027 general elections.

Abiodun made the call on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2026 during the opening ceremony of the 15th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne, Ogun State.

The governor urged Christian leaders to use the influence of the Church to discourage provocation, intimidation, misinformation, electoral malpractice and violence before, during and after the elections.

According to him, elections should provide an opportunity for Nigerians to engage in a contest of ideas, visions and programmes rather than become a platform for division and conflict.

“As we approach the forthcoming 2027 general elections, I enjoin the church to promote responsible citizenship and peaceful participation,” Abiodun said.

He also appealed to the Church to continue serving as a voice for truth, peace and reconciliation while offering constructive counsel to government without compromising its independence.

“The prophetic voice of the Church must correct without hatred, challenge without bitterness, and speak truth to power without surrendering love,” he said.

The 15th General Synod, themed “The Priesthood of All Believers: Equipping God’s People for the Work of the Ministry,” was described by the governor as an opportunity for the Anglican Church to renew its commitment to God and its responsibility to society.

The governor also acknowledged the contributions of the Anglican Church to education, healthcare, moral instruction and human development in Ogun State and Nigeria.

He particularly urged the Church to invest in young people by providing mentorship, opportunities and communities that promote positive values.
