The death toll in the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit parts of Colombia on Monday morning, has risen to over 100, according to President Abelardo de la Espriella. The earthquake left many buildings destroyed and many people injured. Among structures affected were the pediatric and neonatal sections of a hospital in Cali.

The government has declared a national disaster and deployed soldiers to the area to join the emergency response, as other workers race to dig people out of the rubble.

Preliminary reports had it that the earthquake, the most devastating in the country for a long time, shook Cali, Bogotá and several other major cities in the western part of the country, causing significant damage particularly to buildings. The tremor was felt strongly in the nation’s capital, with alarms sounding and people rushing to the streets as a precaution.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake is 5 kilometers east of San José del Palmar and roughly 240 kilometers west of Bogotá. It placed the earthquake at a depth of about 107 kilometers, or 66 miles.

The earthquake is said to have been felt across a broad swath of Colombia, including Bogotá, Cali, Pereira and Manizales, sending residents rushing from homes, offices and other buildings.

One social media video showed people in an airport building trying to hold on to pillars and poles to keep safe, as the earthquake shook the structure, sending fittings debris in the building flying all over the place.

The earthquake is said to have affected nearby Panama, Ecuador and Venezuela.
