Thirty-six hours after the 7.4-magnitude quake hit western Colombia, a woman has been rescued from the rubble in the city of Pereira. This comes as the death toll in the earthquake has risen to almost 200, with hundreds of others reported to be missing.

The 32-year-old woman, Daniela Largo, from was pulled from beneath a collapsed building in following a rescue operation that lasted for 10 hours.

Firefighters finally managed to reach her via a tunnel they dug below four concrete slabs under which she had been buried.

Reports say 79 people are confirmed to have died in Pereira, a city in Colombia’s coffee-growing region, the second-highest number after Cali, where 95 are dead.

The earthquake left many buildings destroyed and many people injured. Among structures affected were the pediatric and neonatal sections of a hospital in Cali.

The government President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national disaster and deployed soldiers to the disaster areas to join in the emergency response, as workers raced to dig people out of the rubbles.
