My Lessons From The Marvel Cinematic Universe (Series 01: Power Pass Power)

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4.

I love super hero movies! Right from childhood, I spun webs with spider man, fought crimes alongside Bat man and nursed a crush on Clark Kent a.k.a Super Man for a long time.

I was slightly in awe of this super human beings who could never be harmed and always protected the universe. They were immortal to my young mind. As I grew older though, I began to see the flaws in them, the bitterness in Bat Man and his thirst for revenge, Super Man’s vulnerability to the kryptonite, and truthfully, I loved them more as they were less otherworldly and more relatable.

My introduction to the Marvel movie was at the scene where the Hulk was about to attack Loki (the god of mischief) and he yelled at Hulk to stop. I will never forget his word, he said, ‘I am a god, you are all beneath me, I…’

He didn’t finish though because Hulk grabbed him by the legs and smashed his body on the floor. He is a god, yes, so he didn’t die but he was in severe pains.

What grabbed my attention though was the parting shot of Hulk; dropping Loki, he walked away saying, ‘puny gods’ with so much disgust in his tone.

My attention was captivated as I immediately likened it to the spiritual. We have so much power and authority given to us by Jesus but we cower before demons because, well, they are demons. Scary, bad demons.

There’s a lesson to learn here.

Loki was smart, Loki was sly and he had the Tesseract (containing the mind stone to control the minds of humans), a powerful tool that could either kill his enemies instantly or capture their minds.

He had the world in the palm of his hands and he knew it! Thanos had promised Him an army to rule earth. He was ready! He was treated with caution, if not feared by the other Avengers.

But a normal looking Bruce Banner knew he had a Hulk inside of him, and that one had no qualms about standing up to Loki. His go-to-word after all was ‘smash’, and smash Loki he did.

Let’s leave demons for now. Are there difficult people who threaten your very existence? Could be that boss or lecturer that demands that you sleep with them to get promoted or, that colleague that threatens to deal with you if you do not cooperate him to commit fraud?

Or perhaps, that bully in school that keeps calling you names? Do you back down? Think death would be easier? Hide in a corner? How about that one that threatens you with ‘jazz’? Come on!

Who do you have inside of you? Are you confronting your problems and calling them ‘puny’ or treating them with kid gloves?

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature...
